North Dunedin

From The Octagon, grab your car and drive north up George Street for five blocks. Turn right onto Albany Street, then park. Explore Otago Museum E [map] (419 Great King Street; https://otagomuseum.nz; free), home to New Zealand’s largest fossil, and a treasure-trove of Maori and Pacific Island artefacts. The Precinct Café, see 2 [map], serves light refreshments.

Drive east on Albany Street to the Cumberland Street junction. On the left is the campus of the University of Otago, and its main clock tower. Turn right onto Cumberland Street and drive past the historic Law Courts, the magnificent 54m (180ft) spire of First Church, and statue of Queen Victoria in Queens Gardens.
